Successful start for Nicola Spirig in the triathlon world championship series: In her first world championship series race of this year Spirig has reached the very good fourth place. The 2012 Olympic champion was only five seconds behind on the podium in Hamburg - and that in her second World Championship series race after the birth of her daughter Malea. This is another reason why the 36-year-old is extremely satisfied: "I have done a lot of leading work on the bike course, which was quite demanding from a technical point of view. This enabled me to catch up with the top group," Spirig analyses the course of the race. "But it was a tough bike race," said the silver medallist of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Thanks to a quick change Spirig was the first to run on the 5-kilometre track, but at the beginning he was struggling with side stitches. Nicola's assessment: "I'm not in top form yet and can therefore be very satisfied with a place in the top five."

The victory in Hamburg went to the Frenchwoman Cassandre Beaugrand, second place went to the German Laura Lindemann, the American Katie Zaferes took third place.

Fought sacrificially
After the race on Saturday evening (14 July) Nicola competed with the Swiss team at the Mixed Team Relay World Championship on Sunday (15 July). This race was not only about World Championship medals, but also about points for Olympic quota places.

The team with Julie Derron, Andrea Salvisberg, Nicola Spirig and final athlete Adrien Briffod finished eighth. Salvisberg sent Nicola Spirig lying in eighth place in the direction of the Alster. Spirig could keep his rank in swimming. She then rode her bike in the chasing group behind the four leading nations. However, when climbing onto the bike Nicola lost a cycling shoe and thus lost a few valuable seconds. In running she fought her way up to sixth place. Final athlete Briffod lost three places in swimming, finished cycling in a group of 5 and finally finished eighth.
For the next mixed-team relay race in Edmonton on 28 July, the Swiss Triathlon team will probably be put together differently.

Now to the training camp
Nicola Spirig travels to the training camp in St. Moritz for another three weeks after her return and takes part in the triathlon in St. Moritz on August 5.
