Nicola Spirig: Back in competition mode
Spirig made her competitive return ten days ago. At the Swiss Duathlon Championships in Apples (Canton Vaud), the six-time European triathlon champion prevailed in a tough race over duathlon world championship runner-up Melanie Maurer. This past weekend, Spirig triumphed at the Taegi-Triathlon in Wettingen (Switzerland). In her first competitive triathlon since fracturing the radius head on her left elbow, she enjoyed solid outings over the distances of 1km swimming, 36km cycling and 7km running, winning her second race within a week’s time in the process.
"I am very satisfied with how things have gone over the past couple of events," confirmed Spirig. "I am still in a bit of pain upon hitting water, but overall, I feel good and have been able to gain valuable insights that will help me as I move forward.”
Next up for the mother of three is a trip to the Swiss Athletics Championships in Basel, where she’ll compete over 5’000m this coming Friday (September 11). She’ll then participate at the Uster Triathlon (September 13) before likely completing this current swing of competitive starts at the Swiss Triathlon Championships in Sursee (300m swimming, 6km cycling and 1.5km running) on September 27. The two-time Olympic medal winner hopes that these three starts will provide additional clues, as she has her eyes set on the 2021 season, highlighted by her fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo.
