Successful start to the season

Nicola Spirig wins again and prepares in July in an altitude training camp in St. Moritz for the highlights of the season.

The double Olympic medal winner entered the year 2018 unusually late. After a protracted tendinitis of the hamstring muscles, Nicola Spirig launched her season on the 1500m track at the Whitsun meeting in Zofingen with a victory. In June she won the Bern Triathlon and in Zofingen she became Swiss Duathlon Champion.

The mother of two intervened in international events on 7 June at the Mixed Team Relay Competition in Nottingham (sixth place).Three days later, the exceptional athlete finished her first competition block with an exciting race and second place behind Fabienne Schlumpf at the Bern Women's Run.

"I'm happy with my start to the season. The first races were great fun," says Nicola Spirig."Training went well in the past few weeks, I can feel the form coming back. The races gave me some speed and brought me up a level; the results were very good. Now I am looking forward to a few weeks of training together with my training group and to further national and international races".

Since her son Yannis is in kindergarten and the summer holidays do not start until mid-July, Nicola Spirig has not trained with the training group in St. Moritz until now, but mostly alone at home."Now we can take Yannis out of kindergarten a little earlier and can travel as a family to the high altitude training camp in the Engadine on 4 July. That gives me a good block of altitude training up to the European Championship and the World Cup in Lausanne.

"Spirig sees the fact that she will be able to train with the group at high altitude again in the next few weeks as a "big plus point": "The training will become even more intensive. The training block will include the World Championship Series race in Hamburg together with the Mixed Team Relay World Championship and the national triathlon race in St. Moritz itself".

Nothing has changed in their seasonal goals. The ITU (International Triathlon Union) Mixed Team Relay Series is an important element in securing starting positions for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.The European Triathlon Championships in Glasgow and the World Cup race at the end of August in Lausanne will remain the main competitions for the 2012 Olympic champion. The European Championships and the World Cup in Lausanne will be broadcast live on SRF.
