Team silver medal after single gold for Nicola Spirig!
The Swiss team with Nicola Spirig shone at the European Triathlon Championships and won the silver medal in the mixed competition.
The quartet with Lisa Berger, Andrea Salvisberg, Nicola Spirig and Sylvain Fridelance only had to admit defeat to World Champion France. The Swiss lost only eleven seconds - bronze went to Belgium 22 seconds behind. The relay competition was 300 m swimming, 6.7 km cycling and 1.5 km running.
The six-time individual European champion Nicola Spirig led Switzerland from sixth position to the top as the third relay member. In cycling, the 36-year-old Olympic champion overtook the competition in an impressive manner and distanced them by more than 16 seconds until the second change to running.
After the run Spirig could hand over to Sylvain Fridelance with an eight second lead over France. The man from Vaud did not lose anything towards the back and won the silver medal with a solid performance in all three disciplines. Only in the run he had to let the Frenchman Dorian Coninx go.
Nicola Spirig, who was already overjoyed after her individual gold, says about the team silver medal: "I hadn't counted a medal, but everyone outgrew themselves. That makes me very proud. "I'm also very happy with my competition."
Thanks to its success in Glasgow, Switzerland improved to sixth place in the mixed nations ranking. The top seven by spring 2020 will each receive two individual quota places with men and women for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo 2020, in addition to secure team participation.
