Two Swiss Championships in one week
For the first time in 25 years, Nicola Spirig participated in a cycling race last Wednesday. "There were some new experiences for me, for example the start from the ramp," laughs Spirig, who is satisfied with her second place at the Swiss time trial championship. "The race also takes me further in triathlon and I am proud of this medal," says the 2012 Olympic champion.
After a few days of training, the Olympic runner-up from Rio completed the Swiss Triathlon Championship in Uri at the weekend. The competition was held in sprint distance over 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running.
Spirig, who was the top favourite, got out of the water with a group of six people and managed to shake off some of her rivals with a quick change. After 20km on the bike she completed the five kilometer run alone as leader, whereby she was able to hit a high speed, but never ran at the limit. With a 1'48" lead over Petra Kurikova (CZE), Spirig won her third Swiss Championship title over the sprint distance. "I am very happy to be Swiss triathlon champion. The competition was a good assessment of the situation," said Spirig.
The mother of two travels to the altitude training camp in St. Moritz on July 4 and prepares there for the coming competitions. The next stop for Spirig is Hamburg, where the next competition of the ITU World Triathlon Series will take place in two weeks.
