Eight years ago today, Nicola Spirig reached the pinnacle of her sport and her athletic career: Competing at the 2012 London Olympics, she won the gold medal in thrilling fashion, edging Sweden’s Lisa Nordén by the narrowest of margins, a feat she followed-up with a silver medal four years later, at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

Now a mother of three, Spirig has her eyes set on Tokyo 2021, where she hopes to compete in the fifth Olympic games of her illustrious career. Also a six-time European champion, Spirig can already look back at a long and distinguished career, which is what she most recently did in an in-depth conversation with Switzerland’s RTS and a podcast episode with the International Triathlon Union (ITU):
