Nicola Spirig has already reserved Olympic Hotel for 2020
At a partner event at the Hotel Atlantis by Giardino in Zurich, Nicola Spirig looked back on the past year – and ahead to 2020. In about eight months' time, she will be taking part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo for the fifth time since 2004.
For Nicola Spirig, 2019 was marked by the birth of her son Alexis, her third child. Shortly after the birth, the 37-year-old resumed training, preferably within her training group in St. Moritz. This also enabled her to compare directly with other world-class athletes. Only twelve weeks after giving birth, the first competition followed with the World Championships Series in Hamburg (GER). With her participation, Spirig wanted to help the Swiss team to get points for the Olympic Qualification Ranking. On the other hand, Spirig wanted to improve her individual ranking by starting at the individual race. Despite the very short preparation time after the birth of her son and stitches whilst running, she managed an eighth place. In her first attempt she fulfilled a qualification criterion of Swiss Olympic for Tokyo 2020. For Nicola a great relief and a very positive comeback!
But this success should not mean the end of the season. What followed was the highlight of the season, the World Championship Series Finale at home in Lausanne. With a strong performance, the tenth place resulted for Nicola and secured the second fulfilment of the Swiss Olympic qualification criteria. Afterwards, her father had calculated on the basis of different versions that his daughter would not be able to fall out of the top 50 of the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking until the end of the qualification period in May 2020. Nevertheless, Nicola Spirig decided to travel to Asia. Because a further promotion in the ranking also promised an improvement of the starting position in the Olympic competition in Tokyo. At World Cup starts in Tongeyong (SKR) and Miyazaki (JPN), Spirig finished fifth and fourth respectively. Between the two races, the Olympic champion from London 2012 travelled to the South Korean island of Jeju – where she had already trained in preparation for Beijing 2008 – to explore and reserve hotels, pool lanes, etc. The trip was also a great success. In Jeju next July she wants to get used to the humid heat of Tokyo and the time difference. A hotel in Tokyo, only 800 metres from the start of the triathlon, has already been reserved for the last days before the Olympic race, Spirig told her partners in Zurich.
For the athlete from Bachenbülach, training for the Olympic Games 2020 will start on 1 December – with a two-week training camp on Gran Canaria. This will be followed by two weeks in St. Moritz. In February, the start at the World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, is planned, accompanied by a training camp in Stellenbosch. As before London 2012, one or two starts over the Ironman 70.3 distance could also be part of the program.
At the beginning of May, the Swiss Mixed Relay Team with Nicola Spirig will try to conquer a top 3 place in Chengu, China. This would allow the team to qualify directly for the Olympic Games. Training in St. Moritz is planned for the end of June. And on 28 July (singles) and hopefully on 1 August (team) the two Olympic competitions 2020 will follow.
