Nicola Spirig kick-starts Olympic campaign in Israel
Aiming for a strong showing in the Tokyo Olympics this summer, Nicola Spirig initiated her training program a few weeks ago. The Olympic champion (London 2012) and silver medallist (Rio 2016) is looking forward to her fifth Olympic Games, even though – as a mother of three - preparation for the marquee event will be more demanding and complex than for most of her competitors.
"To me, this is part of my fascination for these Olympic Games," explains Spirig. "The circumstances under which I prepare myself now are different from those I experienced for prior Olympics. Nevertheless, on d-day, I have to once again be at my very best." Spirig actually relishes the challenge, thanks to the support of her family, led by husband Reto Hug, and is looking forward to taking on the world’s best in yet another Olympic competition. “I’ll be doing my very best to hopefully achieve another strong result.”
Her first competitive test on the international stage en route to Japan will be the ISRAMAN Triathlon in Southern Israel on January 31st. Races over the longer Ironman half-distance have proven to be effective preparation for Spirig in the past, who considers the race a welcome dress rehearsal in a competitive setting. This is particularly true in light of Spirig’s successful history in Eilat, where she won her very first world cup event in 2007 and also secured one of her six European Championships to date. Spirig will travel to Eilat on January 29, followed by a post-race trip to Stellenbosch, South Africa, where she’ll spend her next three weeks of early season training.
