Top 10 finish for Nicola Spirig in Daytona

10th-place finish for Nicola Spirig at the "Challenge Daytona” in Daytona, FL. The inaugural world championship race of the Professional Triathlon Organization (PTO) was a welcome late-year test of form ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Consisting of a 2km swim, an 80km bike ride and an 18km run, the 2020 “Challenge Daytona” was Spirig’s final competitive event of 2020. After a good start, in which she came out of the water with the race’s first larger group, Spirig struggled to find her groove on the bike as she could not keep pace with the race’s leaders. The 2012 Olympic champion eventually recovered during the running stage of the race, where she was able to make up considerable ground. In the end, she finished the race in 10th place.

"Unfortunately, things didn't quite work out as planned, especially on the bike course”, said Spirig in a post-race interview. “For some reason, I just wasn’t as sharp as I would have like to be today. But it is, what it is and I have to accept that unfortunately I wasn’t at my best today.”
