Victory in Lisbon and Olympic starting spot with the team

Successful trip to Lisbon for Nicola Spirig. The 39-year-old from Zurich secured an Olympic starting spot with the Swiss mixed relay team on Friday. Two days later she won the World Cup individual race over the Olympic distance.

Nicola Spirig won 12 seconds ahead of Carolyn Hayes of Ireland and 34 seconds ahead of Kirsten Kasper (USA). In difficult conditions with strong winds and correspondingly high waves, the swim leg was a bit of a struggle for Nicola. "It was difficult to see the buoys and many athletes swam into each other", the Olympic Champion from 2012 described the extreme conditions. On the bike course, Nicola was then able to continuously catch up and position herself favourably for the running leg of the race, where she was the only runner to stay under 34 minutes.

In the team relay competition on Friday, Nicolas finished in third together with Alissa Koenig, Andrea Salvisberg and Max Studer, thus securing starting spot for the Olympic Games for team Switzerland. Nicola handed over the lead to the final Swiss athlete, Max Studer, who brought home the podium finish safely. Thanks to this 3rd place, at least two Swiss men and two Swiss women will be eligible to start in the individual races in Tokyo.
